What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease that can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. This can be caused by toxins, certain kinds of drugs, various diseases, alcoholism, and infections.

 What are the Statistics Regarding Hepatitis C?

  • 2013: approximately 29,718 cases in the U.S.
  • Est. 3.5 million have chronic hepatitis C virus infection
  • Approx. 75-85% who become infected develop chronic infection

However, recent advances in drug development have resulted in very effective therapies with the high cure rates.

How Often Should You Get a Hepatitis C Screening? 

It is now recommended that people born between 1945 and 1965 receive a Hepatitis C screening for the infection. People who have used blood products and transfusions prior to 1992 and people who have a history of intravenous drug use should also be tested.

Current users of intravenous drugs should be screened once a year.
